Your Gut Health Needs Serious Attention

8 Signs Your Gut Health Needs Serious Attention

Last week, I reached for my go-to snack — an epic cheese plate — and an hour later, I felt like I’d swallowed a brick. Sound familiar? If you’re nodding along, it might be time to pay closer attention to the signs of poor gut health lurking beneath your cheese-loving exterior.

Gut health is one of those buzzwords that seems to pop up everywhere nowadays, but it’s vital for overall wellness. You see, our gut does more than just help us digest our food; it plays a crucial role in our immune function, mood, and even skin health. So, knowing how to recognize the signs of poor gut health can make a huge difference in how we feel.

By the end of this post, I’ll share a personal story about my awakening to gut health, plus the eight signs you shouldn’t ignore that may indicate your gut needs serious attention.

1. Digestive Issues

This one seems like an obvious sign, right? But it’s easy to brush off occasional bloating, gas, or even that weird feeling in your stomach after eating. We all have off days! However, persistent digestive issues can be a red flag.

According to a 2018 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, chronic digestive problems like bloating and irregular bowel movements can reveal underlying imbalances in gut bacteria. If you find yourself rushing to the bathroom or feeling uncomfortably full after meals — consistently — it may be time to dig deeper into your gut health.

Have you noticed these symptoms lately? It might not just be the takeout you had last week!

2. Unexplained Fatigue

Ever felt a wave of tiredness that a strong cup of oat milk latte can’t fix? While we all have our fair share of late nights and busy schedules, persistent fatigue can be a sign that your gut isn’t functioning optimally.

Our gut health directly impacts energy levels because it’s involved in nutrient absorption. If your body isn’t getting the nutrients it needs, you could find yourself dragging through the day. For many women I’ve worked with, addressing gut health transformed their energy levels in ways they never expected.

3. Food Intolerances

Food intolerances can develop at any age. If you’re suddenly feeling unwell after consuming foods that were once fine, your gut might be trying to send you a message. This can highlight an inflammation issue or dysbiosis (an imbalance of gut bacteria) that makes certain foods hard to digest.

In my experience, when I started tracking my food intake to see how each meal made me feel, I discovered I needed to reduce dairy — which wasn’t shocking given my recent cheese plate adventures!

If you’re finding that foods you used to digest easily are suddenly wreaking havoc on your system, it may be time to dig a bit deeper.

4. Skin Problems

It’s not just your stomach that’s affected by gut health. Skin issues like acne, eczema, and rosacea can also stem from gut imbalances. The gut-skin connection is stronger than you might think. Inflammation in the gut can lead to inflammation in the skin.

A 2020 study published in Nutrients highlighted that women with severe acne often had accompanying gut issues. When I experienced adult acne a few years back, it was shocking how improving my gut health led to clear, healthy skin!

Have you noticed a flare-up in your skin recently? It might not be just your skincare routine — your gut could be trying to tell you something.

5. Sleep Difficulties

If you’re tossing and turning instead of peacefully dreaming, your gut health might be to blame. You see, a well-functioning gut can help regulate your sleep patterns through the production of serotonin, which plays a role in sleep regulation.

Research shows that when our gut microbiome is out of balance, it can lead to sleep disturbances. In my experience, improving my diet and prioritizing gut-friendly foods made a notable difference in my sleep quality.

Are you staring at the ceiling at midnight? Your gut could have something to do with it!

6. Bad Breath

This one might be a little embarrassing to admit, but bad breath isn’t just something you notice when you wake up in the morning after too many late-night snacks. Chronic bad breath could signal that your gut isn’t happy.

A 2019 study published in the Journal of Clinical Dentistry found that certain gut disorders can lead to halitosis, or chronic bad breath. Improving your gut health could help freshen things up a bit — not to mention boost your confidence!

I’ve found that simply incorporating more prebiotics and probiotics into my diet has done wonders for my overall gut health — and my breath isn’t so bad either!

7. Mood Swings

Feeling more irritable or anxious than usual? Your gut health might be at play. The gut-brain axis is a direct link between our gut health and mental health. About 90% of serotonin (the feel-good hormone) is produced in the gut.

When the gut is imbalanced, it can affect hormone production and lead to mood fluctuations. During my own journey to better health, I was amazed to discover how happy food choices like fermented veggies and probiotics positively impacted my mood overall.

So, if you’re feeling a little off, it could be time to check in with your gut.

8. Persistent Infections or Illness

If you notice you’re catching every cold that comes your way or you have frequent infections, it could signal decreasing immune function from poor gut health. Your gut really is your second brain, and it plays a crucial role in maintaining a robust immune system.

A 2021 study published in Nutrition Reviews suggested that an imbalance in gut bacteria can lead to increased susceptibility to infections. Strengthening your gut health can improve immune responses and help minimize these pesky illnesses.

When I experienced chronic sinus infections a few years ago, adjusting my gut health made a world of difference. It’s incredible how much our bodies are interconnected!

What to Do If You Recognize These Signs

If you’ve resonated with any of these signs, don’t panic. The good news is that there are steps you can take to improve your gut health. Incorporating more fiber-rich foods, probiotics, and fermented products into your diet can have a significant positive effect. Going for a walk with Biscuit might be a great way to get some fresh air while also boosting your digestive health!

In my health coaching practice, I’ve seen this pattern constantly. Many women who focus on restoring gut health also experience a wide array of positive changes in their overall well-being.

But remember, it’s not about perfection. You don’t have to overhaul your diet overnight. Start small, and implement realistic habits that work for you and your lifestyle.

And if you’re ever in doubt, it’s worth reaching out to a healthcare provider for guidance tailored to your specific situation. You don’t have to get it perfect. You just have to start!
